The thyroid gland, located in the throat area, controls the dogs metabolism.
In hypothyroidism there is not enough of the hormone thyroxine produced and the rate of metabolism is slowed down.
Signs and Symptoms
Signs of hypothyroidism are lethargy, exercise intolerance, intolerance of temperature extremes, weight gain and skin and coat changes. Hair loss is usually symmetrical with this disease.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis is done with a simple blood test.
Treatment consists of daily doses of synthetic hormone. Treatment must continue for the remainder of the dogs life in most cases.
Holistic vets may recommend glandular supplements along with the thyroxine.
